Perfect 11 Day Itinerary in Scotland

Discover the Best of Scotland with The Traveling Professor

Experience the wild beauty of the Scottish Highlands, charming coastal villages, and the historic capital of Edinburgh. Our Scotland small group tour combines legendary castles, scenic rail journeys, and expert local guides — perfect for solo travelers, couples, and friends seeking authentic adventures.

Day 1: Welcome to Inverness

Arrive in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, and check in at the elegant Inverness Palace and Spa Hotel, overlooking the River Ness. Meet your fellow travelers and join our licensed guide for a walking tour filled with tales of rebellions, witchcraft, prophecies, and clans — plus a surprising story about the Beatles in Inverness.

Day 2: Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle & Culloden Battlefield

Take a scenic Loch Ness cruise, complete with indoor and outdoor viewing decks. Keep an eye out for mysterious sonar blips — and maybe even Nessie herself! Visit the historic Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s most photogenic landmarks, then continue to the haunting Culloden Battlefield, where the fate of the Highlands was sealed in 1746.

Day 3: Dunrobin Castle & Glenmorangie Distillery

Journey north to Dunrobin Castle, a fairytale estate inspired by French châteaux. Explore its gardens, enjoy a falconry demonstration, and soak up sweeping sea views. On the way back, visit the famous Glenmorangie Distillery for a private whisky tasting — a true highlight of any trip to Scotland.

Day 4: Kyle of Lochalsh & Isle of Skye by Scenic Rail

Enjoy one of the world’s most beautiful rail journeys from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh. Our private van meets us for a full-day tour of the Isle of Skye, where rugged landscapes, misty glens, and dramatic coastlines await. Stop for photos at Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks.

Day 5: Free Day in Inverness

Enjoy a leisure day to explore Inverness your way. Stroll the Victorian Market, bike along the Caledonian Canal, or enjoy a riverside coffee. Our local recommendations help you make the most of your day.

Day 6: Journey to Edinburgh

After breakfast, board the scenic train south to Edinburgh, Scotland’s historic capital. Check in at the Apex Grassmarket Hotel, located in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. Tonight, enjoy a festive welcome dinner to celebrate the journey ahead.

Day 7: Edinburgh Walking Tour & Edinburgh Castle

Explore Edinburgh on foot with our licensed guide. Visit St. Giles Cathedral, Calton Hill, Princess Street Gardens, and the Royal Mile while learning about 1,000 years of history. In the afternoon, discover the treasures of Edinburgh Castle, from the Scottish Crown Jewels to panoramic city views.

Day 8: St. Andrews Day Trip

Head to St. Andrews, the birthplace of golf and home to Scotland’s oldest university. Visit the University of St. Andrews, stroll through cathedral ruins, and walk the iconic beach made famous by Chariots of Fire. Golf lovers can even step onto the legendary Old Course.

Day 9: Abbotsford & Rosslyn Chapel

Travel to the Scottish Borders to visit Abbotsford, the romantic home of writer Sir Walter Scott. Continue to the mysterious Rosslyn Chapel, known for its intricate carvings and connection to The Da Vinci Code. It’s an unforgettable day of history, art, and Scottish legend.

Day 10: Free Day in Edinburgh

Enjoy your final full day at leisure. Your Hop-On, Hop-Off bus pass makes it easy to explore sites like The Royal Yacht Britannia and Palace of Holyroodhouse. Visit museums, shop along George Street, or relax in a traditional Scottish pub.
