Favorite Places to Eat Near the Grassmarket Area of Edinburgh

Favorite Restaurants Near Grassmarket in Edinburgh, Scotland

On our Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands by Scenic Rail small group tour, we like to stay in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh. It’s one of the most convenient and atmospheric neighborhoods in the city, surrounded by historic pubs, excellent restaurants, unique shops, and a lively weekend open-air market—all beneath the dramatic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

After many visits, these are our favorite places to eat near the Grassmarket, all within easy walking distance and consistently enjoyed by our travelers.

Howies Victoria Street Restaurant

Howies Victoria Street is a dependable Old Town favourite for modern Scottish cooking with a seasonal focus. Expect quality local ingredients, daily specials, and a great-value set menu in a warm, candlelit dining room. Service is friendly and efficient, making it easy to settle in after sightseeing. Go for classics like haggis or fish of the day, and leave room for a proper pudding.  This is usually the spot for our first dinner with our small groups once we arrive in Edinburgh.

Oink Restaurant

Oink is the perfect Grassmarket-area pit stop when you want something quick, messy, and memorable. Their signature hog-roast rolls come piled with tender pork, then you pick your bread, stuffing (including haggis), and sauce. It’s simple, satisfying street food with big flavour and very little fuss—ideal between photos of Victoria Street and a wander down to the square. Expect a short queue at peak times.

Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar

Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar pairs Edinburgh legend with classic pub comfort. Just a short stroll from the Grassmarket, it’s a cozy spot for cask ales, whisky, and hearty plates when the weather turns. The atmosphere is traditional and welcoming, working equally well for a midday refuel or an evening pint. If you want that “storybook Edinburgh” pub experience without trying too hard, this spot delivers.

Mary’s Milk Bar

Mary’s Milk Bar is a tiny Grassmarket gem that turns dessert into a destination. The gelato is made fresh on site, with flavours that change daily—so there’s always something new to try. Whether you go for a classic scoop or a playful sundae, it’s worth timing your visit to avoid sell-outs, especially in summer. Grab your cone, step outside, and enjoy one of Edinburgh’s sweetest views.

Petit Paris Restaurant

Petit Paris brings a touch of French bistro charm to the Grassmarket. The menu is comforting and familiar, featuring classics like coq au vin alongside daily specials and a solid wine list. The cozy dining room encourages lingering over a relaxed meal, making it a great alternative to pub fare. It’s popular with locals and visitors alike, so booking ahead is wise during busy times.

The White Hart Inn

The White Hart Inn is the kind of historic Grassmarket pub you wander into for “one drink” and end up staying awhile. Often described as Edinburgh’s oldest pub, dating back to 1516, it offers a snug, atmospheric setting perfect for whisky, a pint, and hearty pub food. Come for the history and character, and visit in the evening when the Grassmarket truly comes alive.
