Foods to Eat in Norway: A Culinary Journey with The Traveling Professor

The Traveling Professor recently enjoyed a small group tour through Norway’s beautiful citiesOslo, Flam, and Bergen. One of the greatest pleasures of travel is tasting local foods, and Norway offers plenty of delicious surprises beyond the well-known salmon and herring. Here are some of the favorite dishes and food experiences from the trip.

Roast Beef on Potato Salad Open-Faced Sandwich
This simple yet delicious lunch combines fresh bread topped with creamy potato salad and thin slices of roast beef. It’s a light, flavorful option that’s easy to love—The Professor even made one at home afterward!

Food Halls: Vippa Food Hall in Oslo
A must-visit for food lovers, Vippa Food Hall offers indoor and outdoor seating with scenic views. Choose from a variety of international dishes—Polish dumplings, Indian street food, Japanese cuisine, Moroccan flavors—and enjoy a local Hansa beer or a glass of wine.

Breakfast Buffets
Breakfast is the main meal in Norway, and every hotel we visited had impressive buffets. From fresh baked breads and cheeses to salmon, reindeer, goat salami, and more, the buffets at the Thon Opera Hotel in Oslo and Fretheim Hotel in Flam provided incredible variety and breathtaking views.

Pølse: The Norwegian Hot Dog
A beloved and affordable meal, the pølse (hot dog) is a must-try. Bergen’s Tre Kronerren is famous for its hot dogs, especially the reindeer variety, but any pølse with traditional toppings is a tasty treat.

Milk Shakes at Hallaisen Ice Cream Parlour
For a refreshing break, nothing beats a creamy milkshake from Hallaisen Ice Cream Parlour & Cocktail Bar—perfect after a day of sightseeing.

Norwegian Pancakes with Jam
A classic and authentic dish, Norwegian pancakes topped with jam offer a sweet and satisfying finish to any meal.

This tasty journey through Norway’s local flavors is perfect for anyone looking to explore authentic cuisine while enjoying stunning Nordic landscapes.  Join us on our next small group tour to Norway.
