7 Items You Probably Never Thought to Pack

Professor Steve Solosky | 24 Sep, 2025 | Packing | Packing Tips | View Counts (17) |Return|

When it comes to travel packing tips, most blogs will tell you about the best suitcases, how to fold clothes, and which airplane pillow is the most comfortable. But today, The Traveling Professor is going to talk about a few unexpected travel items you probably never thought about bringing—but absolutely should. These small additions can make your trip safer, smoother, and far more enjoyable.

1. Apple AirTags – Never Lose Your Luggage Again

If you don’t already own a set of Apple AirTags, now’s the time to get them. These coin-sized tracking devices connect to your iPhone so you can see exactly where your luggage, wallet, or backpack is at all times. Simply slip one into each of your bags and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing your belongings are always trackable.

2. Portable CO2 Detector – A Life-Saving Essential

If you’re staying in an Airbnb, rental apartment, or even a cruise ship cabin, a portable CO2 detector can be a literal lifesaver. Carbon monoxide is odorless and can be deadly. A battery-powered CO2 detector is small, lightweight, and could prevent a tragedy.

3. Microfiber Towels – The Multi-Use Hero

Microfiber travel towels are incredibly versatile. Use them to dry your phone or camera after rain, clean your glasses, wipe down an outdoor café chair, or as a washcloth (which aren’t as common overseas). They’re lightweight, quick-drying, and easy to pack.  On every Traveling Professor small group tour I find multiple uses for this item.

4. Pre-Emptive Medications – Travel Health Made Easy

Before your trip, ask your healthcare provider for prescriptions for common travel-related ailments like sore throats, stomach bugs, or sleep troubles. Having them on hand means you won’t waste precious sightseeing time hunting for a pharmacy abroad.

5. Surfshark VPN – Stream Your Shows Anywhere

Want to watch Netflix, YouTubeTV, or Amazon Prime while overseas? Many streaming services are blocked abroad, but a VPN for travel like Surfshark lets you connect as if you were back in the U.S. Perfect for catching your favorite shows or the big game while away.

6. Traction Cleats – Winter Travel Without the Bulk

Traveling somewhere icy but don’t want to lug heavy snow boots? Travel traction cleats give you solid footing on slippery surfaces and take up almost no space in your luggage.

7. Child Play Scissors – TSA-Friendly & Incredibly Useful

Small TSA-approved child scissors are perfect for cutting airline luggage tags, snipping loose threads, or opening packages. They’re surprisingly useful on any trip and won’t be confiscated at airport security.

Final Word – Think Beyond the ObviousThese seven unexpected travel essentials can help you travel smarter, safer, and with less stress. So next time you pack, think beyond the standard packing list—you might just wonder how you ever traveled without them.
