Sip, Stroll & Gelato: The Perfect Tuscany Day Trip from Florence

02 Mar, 2026 | Italy Travel Destination Guide | View Counts (111) |Return|

A Perfect Day in Tuscany: Tenuta Torciano Wine Tasting + San Gimignano Towers (and the Gelato Finale)

One of the best parts of our Traveling Professor Small Group Venice & Northern Italy tour is that we don’t just “do Florence.” We use Florence as a launchpad for an unforgettable day in the Tuscan countryside—vineyards, medieval towers, postcard views, and yes… a gelato that may ruin all other gelato for you (fair warning).

If you’ve ever dreamed of a day that feels like a Tuscany highlight reel, this is it: Tenuta Torciano Winery in the San Gimignano region, followed by a relaxed afternoon exploring San Gimignano’s iconic historic center.

Morning: Leave Florence and Head for the Hills of Tuscany

Florence is dazzling—but it’s also the perfect place to hop on the road and experience the Tuscany you’ve seen in photos: rolling green hills, cypress-lined roads, vineyards, and olive groves stretching to the horizon.

Our destination is the San Gimignano region, one of Tuscany’s most beloved areas, known for its medieval skyline and exceptional local wines.

Stop #1: Tenuta Torciano Winery — A Tuscan Wine Tasting Experience You’ll Actually Remember

Our first stop is the fabulous Tenuta Torciano Winery, a longtime favorite on our tours. Set in the scenic Elsa Valley with views toward the famous towers of San Gimignano, this experience is equal parts beautiful, delicious, and surprisingly fun.

Explore the Estate and Tuscan Landscape

Tenuta Torciano’s setting is pure Tuscany: lush vineyards, olive groves, and rolling hills, with that classic medieval silhouette of San Gimignano in the distance. It’s the kind of place where you slow down without even trying.

Join the Wine School: Learn How to Taste (Without the Snobbery)

This is not a “swirl-and-nod-seriously” kind of tasting.

You’ll spend time with Pierluigi and his team for an engaging Wine School experience that’s designed to be:

  • Friendly and interactive

  • Easy to understand for beginners

  • Interesting for wine lovers

  • Focused on tasting techniques and wine + food pairing

You’ll learn how to use your senses to pick up aromas and flavors, and you’ll start noticing details that most people miss—without anyone making you feel like you’re taking an exam.

Tuscan Appetizers + Estate Wines = The Perfect Pairing

The tasting is paired with traditional Tuscan appetizers, made with fresh ingredients from the garden and farm. It’s the ideal way to experience Tuscany: not rushed, not complicated—just wonderful food, great wine, and warm hospitality.

Tenuta Torciano also shares the deeper story behind Tuscan wine culture—how soil, climate, tradition, and local life shape what’s in your glass. It’s part tasting, part cultural experience, and it always ends with a lot of smiles.

Stop #2: San Gimignano — Medieval Towers, Stunning Views, and a Perfect Two-Hour Visit

After our winery experience, we continue to the main event: San Gimignano, the medieval hilltop town famous for its tower houses—a skyline that looks like Tuscany time-traveled and decided to stay.

We typically enjoy about two hours in the historic center—just the right amount of time to see the highlights, browse, and soak in the atmosphere.

What to Do in San Gimignano (Our Favorite Highlights)

Here are a few “can’t miss” options that make the most of your visit:

  • Climb Torre Grossa for sweeping views over the Tuscan countryside

  • Stroll through Piazza della Cisterna, the town’s postcard-perfect main square

  • Visit the Duomo (Collegiata) for its remarkable interior and artwork

  • Sip or sample Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the town’s signature white wine

  • Walk up to the Rocca di Montestaffoli area for relaxed views and a quieter moment away from the crowds

San Gimignano is charming, walkable, and full of little “wow” moments—stone streets, artisan shops, and views that make you stop mid-sentence.

The Grand Finale: Gelateria Dondoli (Yes, It’s Worth the Hype)

And to top it all off… we do what any responsible traveler must do in San Gimignano:

Gelato at the world-famous Gelateria Dondoli.

It’s award-winning, wildly popular, and honestly—after a day of Tuscan wine, countryside air, and medieval beauty—this is the sweetest possible ending. (Also: you’ll suddenly understand why people are willing to stand in line for gelato. That’s how you know it’s serious.)

Why This Tuscany Day Trip Works So Well on a Small Group Tour

A day like this is exactly why travelers love the Traveling Professor small group style:

  • No big buses, no chaos

  • A thoughtfully planned day that still feels relaxed

  • A perfect blend of culture, food, wine, scenery, and free time

  • The kind of shared experience that turns travel companions into friends

If you’re joining us on our Venice & Northern Italy tour, this Tuscany day is one of those memories you’ll talk about long after you’re home—usually starting with: “Remember that winery… and then the towers… and THEN the gelato?”

Because yes. That day. That was Tuscany.
