Rouen, Dinan, and Honfleur: Three French Towns I’d Happily Visit Again
France has its superstars. Paris gets the headlines. Provence gets the romance. The Riviera gets the glamour. But some of the places I enjoy most are the towns that do not need to show off. They just quietly go about being beautiful, historic, walkable, and full of good things to eat.
Rouen, Dinan, and Honfleur are three such places and they are perfect places to visit when on The Traveling Professor's Paris and Normandy River Cruise.
Each has its own personality. Rouen is grand and historic, with Gothic architecture and the story of Joan of Arc around nearly every corner. Dinan is medieval Brittany at its storybook best. Honfleur is charming, artistic, and so attractive around the harbor that you may find yourself taking far too many photos of boats you had no prior interest in.
These are not places to rush through. They are places to stroll, pause, look up, sit down, order well, and enjoy.
Rouen: Gothic Drama and Serious History
Rouen is one of those cities that makes a strong first impression. The cathedral is magnificent, the old town is full of half-timbered buildings, and the whole place feels layered with history. This is a city where you can admire great art, walk medieval streets, and reflect on the story of Joan of Arc all in the same afternoon.
The obvious star is Notre-Dame Cathedral, one of the great Gothic churches of France. Even if you think you have seen enough cathedrals to last a lifetime, Rouen may change your mind. Monet certainly found it interesting enough to paint over and over again.
Another essential stop is the Gros Horloge, the city’s famous astronomical clock. From there, the pleasure is really in wandering. Rouen is an excellent place to do what I consider one of the great joys of European travel: walk without much of a plan and let the town do the work.
Best Things to Do and See in Rouen
Start with Notre-Dame Cathedral, Rouen’s most famous landmark and one of the great Gothic churches in France.
Walk through the old center to see the Gros Horloge, one of the city’s most recognizable sights.
Visit places connected to Joan of Arc, whose final chapter unfolded here.
Spend time at the Musée des Beaux-Arts if you enjoy painting and want a cultural break from church interiors and cobblestones.
And above all, give yourself time to wander. Rouen is very good at rewarding aimless walking.
Luxury Hotel Recommendation in Rouen
A fine luxury choice in Rouen is Hôtel de Bourgtheroulde. It has the kind of elegance and historic character that suits the city beautifully, and its central location makes it easy to explore on foot.
Recommended Place to Eat in Rouen
For a memorable dinner in Rouen, I would recommend L’Odas. It is polished, refined, and a very good choice for travelers who want a meal that feels a little special.
Dinan: Medieval Brittany, and Proud of It
Dinan is the sort of town that makes you wonder whether France is showing off. Ramparts, stone buildings, half-timbered houses, towers, steep cobbled lanes — it is all here, and somehow it all feels real rather than staged.
This is a town best appreciated slowly. You do not “do” Dinan nearly as much as you wander through it and enjoy being there. There is something deeply satisfying about walking its old streets, passing old houses, peeking into shop windows, and finding views that make you stop for a moment.
The most famous street is Rue du Jerzual, a wonderfully steep and picturesque lane running down toward the port. It is charming, photogenic, and a little demanding on the legs. That is part of its personality.
Best Things to Do and See in Dinan
Walk the ramparts for some of the best views in town and a real sense of Dinan’s medieval history.
Stroll through the old town, where the half-timbered houses and stone buildings give Dinan its special character.
Make time for Rue du Jerzual, the town’s signature street and one of the most memorable walks in Brittany.
Head down to the port for a quieter, more relaxed side of Dinan.
Do not overschedule yourself here. Dinan is a place that improves when you leave room for serendipity.
Luxury Hotel Recommendation in Dinan
A very good upscale choice in Dinan is Hôtel Arvor. Dinan is not really about grand palace hotels, but Hôtel Arvor is stylish, comfortable, and very well located for travelers who want to stay in the heart of things.
Recommended Place to Eat Near Dinan
For a memorable meal in the area, I would recommend Le Bistrot de Gaston in nearby Saint-Malo. No, it is not in Dinan itself, but it is worth mentioning because it is exactly the kind of place travelers remember. The Professor once had one of his favorite meals in France there, and that is not praise I hand out casually. If your travels take you toward Saint-Malo, this is a fine place to enjoy a truly satisfying French meal.
Honfleur: Harbor Charm in Full Force
Honfleur is one of those towns that has people smiling within about ten minutes of arrival. The old harbor is lovely, the light is beautiful, and the whole place feels like it was designed to tempt you into staying longer than planned.
At the center is the Vieux Bassin, the old harbor lined with tall narrow buildings and fishing boats. It is one of the prettiest scenes in Normandy, and yes, it is every bit as charming as people say.
Honfleur also has an artistic soul. It inspired painters, and once you see the light on the water and the harbor, you understand why. Add in inviting side streets, little shops, galleries, and cafés, and you have a town that is very easy to enjoy.
Best Things to Do and See in Honfleur
Spend time around the Vieux Bassin, the old harbor and heart of the town.
Visit Sainte-Catherine Church, one of Honfleur’s most distinctive sights.
Wander the old streets and browse the shops, cafés, and galleries.
Allow yourself time to simply sit and take it in. Honfleur is not improved by rushing.
Luxury Hotel Recommendation in Honfleur
For Honfleur, an excellent luxury choice is Hôtel Saint-Delis. It is intimate, elegant, and full of the sort of charm that fits Honfleur perfectly.
Recommended Place to Eat in Honfleur
A very good restaurant choice in Honfleur is SaQuaNa. It is thoughtful, creative, and a fine pick for travelers who want a meal to match the setting.
Why I Like This Trio So Much
What makes Rouen, Dinan, and Honfleur work so well together is that each offers a different version of what makes travel in France rewarding. You can visit on your own or The Professor's Seine River cruise gives the opportunity for a short visit.
Rouen gives you grandeur, history, and culture.
Dinan gives you medieval atmosphere and Brittany character.
Honfleur gives you beauty, harbor charm, and Normandy elegance.
They also share something important: they are all places that reward travelers who are willing to slow down. These are towns for walking, noticing details, enjoying lunch, lingering over dinner, and not feeling the need to check off ten attractions before noon.
That, in my view, is civilized travel.
Final Thoughts
There are plenty of destinations that impress on paper. Rouen, Dinan, and Honfleur do something more important: they are enjoyable in person.
Rouen has substance. Dinan has charm. Honfleur has allure.
Give each a little time, wear comfortable shoes, and arrive hungry. France will take care of the rest.
