Discover the Best Day Trip from Florence to Siena: How to Get There and What to See

Our Traveling Professor small group tours to Italy often include a day trip to Siena.

If you're planning a day trip from Florence to Siena, the best way to travel is by bus, not train. While train tickets cost around 16 euros round trip, the bus offers a smoother and more convenient journey. The SITA bus station and ticket office are conveniently located just about 50 yards to the left of Florence’s Santa Maria Novella (SMN) train station. Here’s a helpful map to the bus station for easy navigation.

Top Attractions to Visit in Siena

Il Campo: Often called the best square in all of Italy, Il Campo is a must-see in Siena. Grab a coffee at one of the charming cafes lining the square and soak in the atmosphere. Twice each summer, the square transforms into a thrilling race track for the famous Palio horse races. Don’t miss the Fountain of Joy, the centerpiece of the square, and consider climbing the City Tower for views—though the panorama from the Museo dell’Opera e Panorama is even more breathtaking.

Duomo Museum (Museo dell'Opera e Panorama): Purchase a combo ticket to visit both the cathedral and Santa Maria della Scala. This museum showcases magnificent artworks from the cathedral. For the best views of Siena and Tuscany, climb the 131 narrow corkscrew steps to the Panorama del Facciatone.

Duomo Cathedral: Siena’s cathedral is far more impressive than Florence’s Duomo. Inside, admire works by Bernini and Michelangelo, and marvel at the statues of over a thousand years of popes watching from the rafters.

Santa Maria della Scala: Located opposite the Duomo, this former hospital is filled with stunning frescoes and Etruscan art, making it well worth your time.

Exploring Siena on Foot

Siena is a true walking city. Stroll leisurely along Via Bianchi di Sotta, the main shopping street, and enjoy window shopping at your own pace. A typical visit lasts about four hours, giving you plenty of time to take in the sights and relax.
