When traveling with our small group tours to Europe during the holiday season, the Austrian and Bavarian Christmas markets are always a highlight. These festive winter journeys often include visits to Vienna, Steyr, Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Munich—each with its own unique holiday charm.
While Austria and Bavaria do have modern shopping malls and gift shops, the magic of the season is best experienced in the traditional Christmas markets. Each market features local vendors selling handmade crafts, regional foods, and holiday treats. The air is filled with the scent of mulled wine (Glühwein) and grilled sausages, while friends and neighbors gather to celebrate. Visiting these markets feels like stepping back to the Christmases of decades past.
Vienna
With more than 40 Christmas markets scattered throughout its neighborhoods, Vienna is a winter wonderland. Larger markets feature ice skating rinks, while smaller neighborhood markets showcase local specialties. The entire city, including its historic trams, is decked out in sparkling lights and decorations.
Steyr
This charming town offers a traditional old-town Christmas market filled with music, brass concerts, and storytelling. One of the most unique stops here is the Christkindl Post Office, where visitors can send holiday cards with a special Christmas postmark.
Salzburg
Steeped in history and holiday spirit, Salzburg is where Silent Night was first performed. Trumpeters play from church towers on Thursday nights, and the Christmas trees are beautifully adorned. A memorable highlight is dining at Stiftskeller St. Peter, founded in 803 A.D., while enjoying traditional Austrian Christmas music.
Innsbruck
Nestled in the Tyrolean Alps near the Italian border, Innsbruck offers a more intimate, religious-themed Christmas celebration. Horse-drawn carriages, snow-covered peaks, and riverside markets filled with crafts and seasonal treats make it truly enchanting.
Munich
Although Munich is a bustling city, its holiday season is divided into smaller, charming markets. We prefer visiting on weekdays when crowds are lighter, allowing us to enjoy the festive atmosphere at a more relaxed pace.
