3 Hidden Treasures in Paris You Need to Discover

Professor Steve Solosky | 20 Oct, 2025 | Paris and France | View Counts (84) |Return|

The Traveling Professor knows Paris.  Paris is a city of discovery. Beyond the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the Seine, there are countless hidden gems waiting to be explored. In this post, we’ll reveal three hidden treasures in Paris that will give you a new appreciation for the city’s culture, history, and charm.

1. Musée des Arts et Métiers – Where Innovation Meets History

When people think of Paris, they often imagine art, fashion, and fine dining. But Paris also boasts a fascinating legacy in science, technology, and innovation.
The Musée des Arts et Métiers showcases over 80,000 historical artifacts that trace the evolution of human ingenuity. You’ll find Edison’s early sound recording devices, a French airplane predating the Wright Brothers, as well as antique cars, early televisions, and computers.

It’s a captivating journey through centuries of invention — and one of Paris’s most underrated museums. Plan for about two hours to explore.

2. Canal Saint-Martin – A Peaceful Cruise Through Local Paris

For a relaxing and authentic Parisian experience, take a boat tour along Canal Saint-Martin. Operated by Canauxrama, these cruises offer a tranquil escape from the busy city center.

Drift through tree-lined waterways, glide under historic iron bridges, and watch as your boat rises and lowers through the canal locks. The daytime tours are especially picturesque, revealing some of the city’s most charming residential neighborhoods.

Tours depart from Bassin de la Villette and end near the Bastille. For the best view, sit right at the front of the barge and enjoy every moment.

3. Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal – A Hidden Spiritual Haven

Tucked away behind the Bon Marché department store at 140, rue du Bac, this modest chapel is one of Paris’s most visited yet least-known sites.

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal holds deep religious significance — it’s where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré in 1830, inspiring the creation of the Miraculous Medal. Today, the chapel remains a sacred pilgrimage site and the Motherhouse of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

Even for non-religious visitors, it’s a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the city.

Discover a Different Side of Paris

If you’re planning your next trip, step beyond the typical tourist routes and explore these unique Paris attractions. From scientific wonders to quiet canals and hidden chapels, each of these sites tells a story that’s part of what makes Paris so unforgettable.
