5 Foods to Try in Paris

Paris isn’t just a feast for the eyes—it’s a feast for the taste buds. On our Traveling Professor Small Group Tours, discovering the city’s culinary treasures is just as exciting as strolling past the Eiffel Tower or exploring hidden neighborhoods. But what should you really try in Paris, especially if you’ve visited before? Professor Steve Solosky shares his top five Parisian dishes that every foodie should experience.

1. French Onion Soup
Imagine a bowl of slowly caramelized onions swimming in rich, savory meat stock, topped with gratineed croutons and melted Gruyère cheese. That’s French onion soup, a warm hug in a bowl and a favorite among travelers on our tours.

2. Steak Frites
Simple, classic, and utterly satisfying—steak paired with perfectly crisp French fries. This brasserie staple might look familiar, but Parisian execution is something else. Just don’t be surprised if your well-done steak earns a few curious looks!

3. Croque-Monsieur (and Madame)
The French answer to the ham-and-cheese sandwich, the Croque-Monsieur is crispy, cheesy, and indulgent. Add a fried egg on top, and voilà—you’ve got the Croque Madame, a brunch-worthy delight you’ll dream about long after leaving Paris.  Just about everyone who travels on our Paris small group tour winds up ordering this 2 or 3 times for lunch

4. Escargot
Adventurous eaters, this one’s for you. Escargot baked in garlic butter and herbs might seem daring, but one bite and you’ll understand why it’s a Parisian favorite. Pair it with a fresh baguette and prepare for a taste that’s truly out of this world.

5. Ile Flottante
Dessert lovers, rejoice! Ile Flottante, or “Floating Island,” features pillowy meringue poached in milk, floating gracefully in a silky crème anglaise. Julia Child’s favorite, this treat is practically impossible to recreate at home—Paris is the perfect place to indulge.

Eating your way through Paris is an adventure all its own. On our Traveling Professor Small Group Tours, we don’t just show you the sights—we take you straight to the heart of Parisian cuisine, guiding you to the best spots to savor these iconic dishes.
