Best Tips for Overcoming Jet Lag on Overnight Flights to Europe

Traveling across time zones can be tough, but The Traveling Professor has gathered expert advice from over a hundred overnight flights to and from Europe on his small group tours, combined with tips from flight crews and seasoned travelers on his small group tours to Europe. These proven strategies will help you overcome jet lag and arrive refreshed, ready to enjoy your trip.

1. Rest Up Before Your Flight

Since most overseas flights depart in the evening, it’s important to stay in bed as long as you can before heading to the airport. Being well-rested before boarding sets you up for a better travel experience.  The Professor learned this from a long-time flight attendant.

2. Choose Your Seat Wisely

Investing in preferred seating, like premium economy, makes a significant difference. You don’t have to fly first or business class to avoid cramped coach seats. The extra space and comfort in premium economy will help you feel better during the flight.

3. Stay Hydrated, Limit Alcohol

Alcohol can worsen dehydration and jet lag symptoms, so minimize your intake. Instead, drink plenty of water throughout the flight to stay hydrated and help your body adjust.

4. Nap Smartly on the Plane

Taking a short nap is beneficial, but avoid trying to sleep through the entire flight. This helps your body stay closer to the new time zone and reduces jet lag.

5. Sync with Local Time Upon Arrival

When you arrive at your hotel, take some time to rest. However, once awake, immediately follow the local schedule. For example, if you normally eat dinner at 6:30 pm at home, eat dinner at 6:30 pm local time. This adjustment helps your internal clock reset faster.
