Unexpected but Essential Travel Items You’ll Be Glad You Packed

Professor Steve Solosky | 02 Aug, 2025 | Packing | Packing Tips | View Counts (605) |Return|

Today, The Professor is diving into the overlooked essentials—the travel gear that might just save your trip, your gear, or even your life. Whether you’re heading overseas, taking a cruise, or booking an Airbnb, these unexpected travel items deserve a spot in your suitcase.

Apple AirTags: Track Your Luggage Anywhere

If you don’t already have Apple AirTags, it’s time to invest. These tiny, coin-sized trackers pair with your iPhone and allow you to monitor the location of your suitcase, backpack, or even your wallet in real time. Lost luggage? You’ll know exactly where it is. For peace of mind while flying or moving between destinations, this is one of the best travel tech gadgets out there.

Portable CO2 Detector: Safety First in Airbnbs and Cruises

Planning to stay in an Airbnb or cruise cabin? A portable CO2 detector could be a literal lifesaver. Carbon monoxide is odorless and invisible—but potentially fatal. This compact device alerts you to unsafe levels, and the battery-powered models are ideal for travel.

Microfiber Towels: Multipurpose & Space-Saving

One of the most versatile travel accessories you can bring, microfiber towels are a smart substitute for bulky washcloths. They’re perfect for drying off electronics, cleaning glasses, or using at the beach or gym. Plus, in many international destinations, washcloths aren’t typically provided—so it’s handy to have your own.

Pre-Emptive Medications: Avoid the Pharmacy Hunt Abroad

Don’t wait until you're sick abroad to think about meds. Talk to your doctor before your trip and ask for prescriptions for common travel ailments—like antibiotics for sore throats, meds for stomach bugs, and a few sleep aids for jet lag. They weigh next to nothing, and having them on hand could save you stress and time.

Surfshark VPN: Stream Your Favorite Shows While Abroad

Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTubeTV often don’t work the same outside your home country. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) like Surfshark lets you browse securely and access your content as if you were back in the U.S. (or wherever you're from). It’s also great for protecting your data when using public Wi-Fi.

Headed to a snowy or icy destination but don’t want to pack bulky boots? Traction cleats are lightweight, compact, and can be slipped over your regular shoes for instant grip on slippery surfaces. They’re especially useful for winter cities or icy hikes.

Universal Power Adapter & Converter: A Must for International Trips

Okay, this one’s not exactly a secret—but it’s still a must-have. A reliable power adapter and voltage converter is essential when traveling abroad. We’ve tested dozens, and this one is our favorite. It works in most countries, supports multiple devices, and helps you avoid damaging your electronics.

Power Bank

The Professor loves this one and takes it on all his small group tours.  This power bank has a slim size and keeps the number of wires needed to a minimum.

Portable Fan

This was a lifesaver on a recent small group tour to Peru and Machu Picchu when we were in the Amazon.   Not only did this fan provide a cool breeze, it provided some ambient noise at night to help us sleep, even on a tour like our small group tour to Ireland.

Final Thoughts

Packing smart doesn’t mean packing more—it means bringing the right things. These under-the-radar travel essentials can make your trip smoother, safer, and way more enjoyable. Before your next international adventure, add these items to your checklist—you’ll thank yourself later.
