5 Things You Should Never See or Do in Europe

5 Overhyped European Tourist Attractions and Smarter Alternatives

Europe is packed with incredible sights, but some famous tourist attractions don’t quite live up to the hype. From Scotland’s “Hogwarts Express” steam train to Ireland’s infamous Blarney Stone, here are five spots where your time and money might be better spent elsewhere — plus smart alternatives recommended by The Traveling Professor.

1. Harry Potter’s “Hogwart’s Express” Train — Scotland (Jacobite Steam Train)

The Jacobite train crosses the breathtaking Glenfinnan Viaduct, immortalized in the Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts Express route. The scenery is stunning, but the actual steam train experience can be disappointing.  We dropped this activity from our Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands by Scenic Rail Tour

Inside the historic carriages, views are limited, seats are uncomfortable, and the ride is noisy and bumpy. Boarding can be chaotic, with seat mix-ups common despite reserved window seats. Tickets cost about £69 (~$94 USD) for a round trip.

Better alternative: Take the regular 8:30 a.m. local train to Glenfinnan for just $10. You’ll enjoy more relaxed boarding, save money, and get fantastic photos of the Jacobite train crossing the viaduct. Return on the 11:00 a.m. train.

2. The Bastille — Paris, France

Famous for the storming that ignited the French Revolution, the Bastille prison itself no longer exists. Today, only a small monument and some stones mark the site, which can feel underwhelming.  We walk by where the Bastille was on our Paris small group tour, but if we did not tell you it was there at one time, you would never know it.

If you want to dive deeper into Parisian history, explore the Conciergerie prison museum or visit the Musée Carnavalet, which offers rich insights into the French Revolution.

3. Blue Grotto — Capri, Italy

The Blue Grotto promises a romantic boat adventure, but reaching it involves a long wait, choppy seas, and boarding tiny boats that only allow entry by lying on your back. The short visit inside the grotto lasts just minutes and costs nearly $50.

Better alternative: Take the Laser Capri Boat tour for about $20, which includes an hour-long scenic cruise around Capri and entry to a beautiful grotto cave—less hassle and more value.

4. Kissing the Blarney Stone — Ireland

This iconic ritual involves climbing a narrow spiral staircase to kiss a slimy stone perched 90 feet above the ground at Blarney Castle. Visitors often face long lines and the unnerving experience of being held upside down by attendants.  We dropped this from our Dublin and the Gems of Ireland itinerary a long time ago.

If you’re not a fan of crowds or heights, consider exploring Ireland’s stunning landscapes and cozy pubs instead—many travelers find those experiences far more rewarding.

5. Temple Bar — Dublin, Ireland

Temple Bar is famous for its nightlife, but it’s also known for overcrowded streets filled with noisy tourists, overpriced drinks, and plenty of inebriated revelers. If you prefer a more authentic and enjoyable evening, head to Dublin’s Brazen Head, the city’s oldest pub, for great atmosphere without the chaos.  You won't find this activity on our Ireland itinerary either.
